  • Sleep Disorders Center

The Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of persons with suspected sleep disorders and the full range of treatments available to reverse or improve diagnosed sleep disorders. The center has the longest-standing accreditation in Mississippi by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

The Sleep Disorders Center evaluates and treats patients with complaints, including:

    • Snoring and breathing problems during sleep
    • Excessive daytime sleepiness
    • Sleep terrors and sleepwalking
    • Sleep fragmentation and insomnia

    Evaluation, diagnosis and treatment

The patient's sleep and medical history are reviewed in detail by the evaluating physician during the initial office visit. If necessary, a diagnostic overnight sleep study (nocturnal polysomnogram) is then scheduled. This is a multi-parameter, non-invasive and painless test. In certain cases, a Multiple Sleep Latency Test is performed the day following the overnight study to objectively measure the severity of daytime sleepiness.

The study findings and treatment options are discussed with the patient, and a detailed report is provided to the referring physician. Treatment effectiveness is assessed in follow-up sessions. Consultations with specialists in other UMMC medical departments may be arranged if necessary.
