  • Training Sites

One of the strengths of our training program at the UMMC is being able to work, teach and care for patients in a world-class medical center. In addition, we have the oldest medical school in the Deep South which affords further academic opportunities for our residents.

    University of Mississippi Medical Center

As the primary site for our residency training program, UMMC is Mississippi’s main teaching hospital. Residents have the opportunity to care for psychiatric patients on two inpatient units (7East and 7West), consultation liaison assessments of medical and surgical patients, and in the outpatient setting. Multiple outpatient subspecialty clinics are included as part of the residency training experience (child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatrics, neuropsychiatry, sleep medicine, women’s mental health and primary care psychiatry).

A broad spectrum of psychiatric disease is seen by these services due to UMMC’s strategic location as a major referral center for Jackson metropolitan area and further Deep South. The increase in patient visits and projected demand has required major expansion of the medical center. Our newly expanded hospital includes more clinical, conference, offices and spaces.

    G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery VA Center

Situated off Woodrow Wilson in Jackson, the VA hospital is an acute care hospital. Here, residents rotate on psychiatry inpatient, neurology, and internal medicine rotations, as well as care for patients in the outpatient setting. The VA has active programs where many of our residents get their substance abuse and addiction experiences and post-traumatic stress disorder.

    Mississippi State Hospital

Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) is a publicly funded psychiatric treatment facility operated under the direction of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. The hospital is located on a 350-acre campus in Whitfield, MS, 15 miles southeast of Jackson, the state capital. Mississippi State Hospital operates 504 licensed psychiatric beds and is accredited by the Joint Commission. The facility also includes 423 licensed nursing home beds and provides a variety of community service programs.

The state hospital facilitates improvement in the quality of life for Mississippians who are in need of psychiatric, chemical dependency or nursing home services by rehabilitating to the least restrictive environment utilizing a range of psychiatric and medical services that reflect the accepted standard of care and are in compliance with statutory and regulatory guidelines.

On their MSH rotation, residents are able to care for patients in the inpatient setting, where the majority of patients have been committed on an involuntary basis, and typically represent the most acutely ill patients in the state. MSH works closely with the community mental health programs across MS to optimize the continuity of care for psychiatric patients. Elective experiences that take advantage of the opportunity to work with various patient populations that are cared for at the hospital are a popular component of the PGY-IV year for many of our residents. This is also a major teaching site for our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship. MSH has outstanding attending members who provide supervision and teaching to our residents.

    Sleep Disorder Center

The Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of persons with suspected sleep disorders and the full range of treatments available to reverse or improve diagnosed sleep disorders. The center has the longest-standing accreditation in Mississippi by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
