    Sign-ins (morning report)

At 8 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, a 30-minute conference takes place with the discussion of the admissions performed in the previous 24-hour period. The conference is designed to encourage discussions between residents and faculty covering topics such as the routine management of common diseases, creating a working differential diagnosis, and evaluating patients with unusual presentations.

Residents in the NICU have separate morning lectures on topics in Neonatology during this time, and residents in the PICU attending to clinical duties as well as rounds in the PICU during this time.

    Board review

Every Wednesday at 8 a.m., a chief resident leads the housestaff through a 30-minute conference, which primarily involves review of board-style questions and high-yield facts.

    Case management conference

Every Friday at 8 a.m., an unknown case is presented and an assigned resident leads the discussion of the initial evaluation, differential diagnosis, and management of the case presented. This is followed by a short didactic lecture on the patient’s primary diagnosis by a member of the faculty.

    Pediatric curriculum

Our curriculum has recently changed to more closely follow the PREP curriculum and encourage more independent learning on behalf of the individual resident. Each month covers a different subspecialty, and residents attend twice weekly lectures on different topics in those subspecialties. Lecturers are encouraged to included APB's content specifications in their lectures. Residents are given outline of the content specifications as well as a guide to where they can find corresponding chapters in Peds Study, Nelson's, Laughing Your Way and PREP questions. Residents are responsible for working through on-line PREP questions with completion of them expected by the end of the academic year. In addition to the in-service exam given in July, an in-house spring in-service exam is given so residents can assess the knowledge they have gained and identify continued areas for improvement.

The residents are encouraged to attend the meeting of Mississippi chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics held twice a year.

    Grand rounds

Each Wednesday at noon, a didactic lecture is given by current faculty, visiting lecturers, or senior residents to the department of pediatrics covering a variety of topics relevant for the general pediatrician.

    Morbidity and mortality conference

On the second Tuesday of the month, M&M conference is held in place of morning sign-ins. Inpatient deaths and any significant complications in the care of patients from the previous month are discussed. Cases are presented by an assigned resident in an effort to identify system-based or practice-based problems and ways of addressing those issues.

    Friday conference

Each Friday at noon, individuals from a variety of fields are brought in to provide residents with insight into areas such as medical billing, negotiating a contract, and managing a practice. Ethics and medico-legal aspects of healthcare are also discussed in this time slot. Journal club is held every other month during one of the Friday conferences and alternates with the Pediatric Resident-Mentor Research Program (PRMRP). The last Friday of the month is dedicated to Resident Meeting.

    Journal Club

Every other month on Fridays at noon, recently published articles are presented to the resident class. The presentations are typically followed by a faculty-led discussion on the evaluation of the literature, utility of the information, and its implementation in clinical practice.

    Resident meeting

On the last Friday of the month at noon, residents meet as a group with the program directors and Chief Residents to discuss issues pertaining to the residency, educational curriculum, system-based concerns, or other inquiries in an informal setting.

    Research (optional)

Residents will be partnered with a research mentor as part of the Pediatric Resident-Mentor Research Program (PRMP). The mentor will help the residents identify an area of interest, explore the topic, and develop a research question and study design. The project will culminate in a Grand Rounds presentation during their third year. Abstracts and publications are always encouraged. Persons with research accepted for presentation at meetings will be funded for travel, meeting registration, food, and lodging.

    Sign-outs

During the week, residents on inpatient rotations receive sign-outs from the night float team at 7 a.m. Afternoon sign-outs occur either at 3 p.m. or 6 p.m. "Sister teams" sign out to each other so that two teams leave at 3 p.m., and two teams stay until 6 p.m. and sign out their patients and their sister team's patients to the night float team. On the weekends, residents sign out to the on-call team when they have completed their work for the day.

In the PICU, sign-outs with the on-call resident occur alongside the attending sign-outs at 4 p.m. In the NICU, residents sign out to either the on-call residents or the Neonatal nurse practitioners at 4 p.m.
