Welcome to the Department of Pathology website at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Our department is committed to excellence in anatomic and clinical pathology services, medical student, pathology resident, fellow, and graduate student education, and basic science research.

We have a faculty consisting of 36 full-time members, 27 pathologists and 9 full-time research faculty members; and over 200 laboratory professionals (medical technologists, histotechnologists and cytotechnologists). Our faculty members have subspecialty expertise in all areas of anatomic and clinical pathology including renal pathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, neuropathology, breast pathology, bone and soft tissue pathology, hematopathology, cytology and fine needle aspiration biopsy, thoracic pathology, transfusion medicine, molecular pathology, medical microbiology and immunopathology.

We have a combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency program with 12 accredited positions as well as an accredited Cytopathology fellowship program. Our faculty and residents teach the medical school and dental school second-year pathology courses (including lectures, small group sessions and laboratory), and we offer second, third and fourth year medical student electives, as well as rotations for trainees from other institutions. Our Sidney A. Coleman Post-Sophomore Medical Student Pathology Fellowship, provides a wonderful opportunity for medical students to complete an additional year of training focused on various aspects of pathology.  This year is typically taken following completion of the second year of medical school (M2), but, junior and senior medical students are also welcome to apply.  We can accommodate up to three post-sophomore fellows.  We also offer a graduate program in pathology for prospective master's degree and PhD candidates.

Our goal is to provide exceptional quality in patient care, education and research collaborations, in a collegial and rewarding professional environment focused on continuous process improvement.
