  • OB/GYN Interest Group

    The OB/GYN Interest Group at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine fosters an interest in the field of OB/GYN and to facilitate a better understanding of the practice of OB/GYN and its subspecialties through professional contacts, exposure to the clinical experience and an accurate representation of the lifestyle of a OB/GYN. The OB/GYN Interest Group will strive to meet the interests and needs of all medical students at the University of Mississippi School Of Medicine who are interested in the field of OB/GYN.

    The objectives of the OB/GYN Interest Group are as follows:

    • Introduce OB/GYN as a career option to students earlier in their medical education (i.e., first year);
    • Gain an understanding of what is involved in a career in OB/GYN, particularly emphasizing the diversity of career options;
    • Inform medical students of the feasibility of lifestyle as an OB/GYN;
    • Provide a realistic understanding of the liability involved with practicing obstetrics and gynecology and contrast it to that of other specialties;
    • Provide students with a faculty perspective of what is needed to gain admission into a residency program in OB/GYN;
    • Introduce the Department of OB/GYN at UMMC to the students and discuss the strengths of the residency program at UMMC;
    • Promote hands-on clinical skills in OB/GYN, including pelvic exams, breast exams, vaginal delivery and suture workshops (using models);
    • Provide students interested in OB/GYN with a resident and/or faculty preceptor early in their medical education to guide the students in their career paths.
