The Division of Nephrology at UMMC was established in 1965 by Dr. John D. Bower. One year later, through his efforts and others, the first dialysis unit (Artificial Kidney Unit) was established. By 1974 the first outpatient hemodialysis facility was established by Kidney Care Inc. under the guidance of Dr. Bower and UMMC nephrology services. Several years later, in 2000, inpatient dialysis services were expanded to include continuous dialysis therapies. The demand for this service quickly grew and in 2007 the CRRT program was expanded further. We now have 12 machines that provide CRRT care in UMMC's four intensive care units. Also in 2007, UMMC hired its first critical care nephrologist in an effort to continue its support of growth in this specialty. In 2008, UMMC added a substantial home dialysis trainnig program to its large outpatient dialysis facility at the Jackson Medical Mall. The following year, in 2009, UMMC opened the first and only pediatric dialysis facility in Mississippi, one for hemodialysis and one for home training of peritoneal dialysis. The growth of this program continues today as UMMC continues to expand its nocturnal hemodialysis unit, which opened in 2010.
