    Salary and benefits

    Salary scales and fringe benefits are commensurate with those of other university hospitals in the South. Residents are provided professional liability coverage for activities for or on behalf of the hospital within the scope of the residency training programs.

    Pay is bi-monthly via direct deposit.

    2013-14 salaries

    • Postgraduate Year 1 - $46,238
    • Postgraduate Year 2 - $47,347
    • Postgraduate Year 3 - $48,670
    • Postgraduate Year 4 - $49,991 

    Insurance programs

    Health and life insurance are provided to the resident. Family coverage, vision, dental and disability are also available.

    Retirement account

    Retirement account with state matching over 100% of resident contribution. Upon graduation, residents typically have over $20,000 of earned retirement.

    Parking

    Covered secured parking is FREE for members of the house staff.

    Resident professional liability program

    The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled that physicians and dentists, who are residents, interns or fellows (hereinafter "House Officers") at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, are employees of the State of Mississippi and are entitled to the protection and immunity from liability under the terms of the Mississippi Tort Claims Act. Pursuant to the Act, UMMC will provide a defense and indemnity to all House Officers against claims for actions or omissions occurring within the course and scope of their employment while at UMMC and/or on official rotation at other Mississippi hospitals or clinics. The same protection is afforded to former house officers for such claims made after their employment, if the claims relate to conduct during the term of their internship, residency, or fellowship. The UMMC resident professional liability program does not cover moonlighting.

    Uniforms

    House staff new to the hospital are furnished three 3/4-length coats.

    Moonlighting

    Our residents who are in good standing are allowed to moonlight near the end of their PGY-2 year. Our residents find many opportunities throughout the state of Mississippi.
