  • Clinical Services

The Department of Anesthesiology provides clinical anesthesia services and critical care management of surgical and obstetric patients throughout the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). With more than 25,000 anesthetics per year, our clinical service provides comprehensive pre-operative medical evaluation, anesthetic treatment for medical procedures, the management of acute, chronic or cancer pain, and the provision of trauma, and other specialized anesthetic treatments. In addition to our General Anesthesia division, we have several subspecialty divisions within the Department of Anesthesiology.

    • The Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia manages anesthesia for a large spectrum of adult cardiac, vascular and thoracic procedures. The division provides anesthesia for routine CABG surgeries, off-pump CABG surgeries,  and single- or multi-valve operations, and patients with an intraaortic balloon pump or with end-stage heart disease presenting for heart transplantations. In addition, the division anesthetizes patients undergoing thoracic surgeries for mediastinoscopy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, esophageal resections, and video-assisted thoracic surgeries.
    •  The Division of Obstetric Anesthesia provides anesthetic management of obstetric patients from the routine births to the most complex. The primary goal of the division is to make the labor and delivery experience safe and pleasant for the mother and her baby. For many women, regional anesthesia (epidural, spinal, or combined spinal-epidural) will be the most suitable anesthetic. To ensure the safest and most effective anesthesia, a qualified anesthesiologist is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the labor and delivery unit.
    •  The Division of Pediatric Anesthesia provides a wide range of pediatric anesthesia services for the complicated and uncomplicated patient requiring elective and emergency surgery at Batson Children’s Hospital. The division also provides anesthetic care of children with congenital heart defects, and is intimately involved with cardiac surgery patients from the initial preoperative evaluation, through the operating room experience and into recovery. All of the members of the division are specialty trained in pediatric anesthesia, with some having additional pediatric specialty training such as pediatric intensive care or pediatric cardiac anesthesia.
    • The Division of Ambulatory Anesthesia is staffed with anesthesia personnel who are experienced in providing anesthesia for patients undergoing outpatient surgery. The cornerstone of the division is the Day Surgery Center, a state-of-the-art facility specifically designed for outpatient surgery.
    •  The Division of Off-Site Anesthesia provides a wide range of comprehensive clinical care for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures outside of the operating room. The division provides anesthesia  at various locations, including computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suites, pediatric and adult cardiac cath lab, special procedures unit (neurovascular), and adult gastroenterology suite.
    • The Division of Pain Services, includes the Acute Pain Service (APS), which is committed to reducing postoperative pain and assisting with the early phases of rehabilitation from surgery. The APS employs a multimodal regimen to control postoperative pain, and provides daily 24-hour coverage and management of patients with postoperative, post-traumatic and other types of acute pain requiring specialized intervention such as epidural analgesia, continuous peripheral nerve blockade and complex pharmacological management.  The Pain Center at the Jackson Medical Mall and the Pain Center at the University Pavilion manages patients with chronic cancer and non-cancer pain using a multidisciplinary approach involving both interventional and noninterventional modalities with the goal of improving quality of living and easing of pain.
