Simulations

This model has a large number of parameters, making a very large number of different simulations possible. Here are some favorites. Click on a link in the table below to open a PDF file of that topic.

Clinical scenarios

A pathophysiological condition can be modeled. The current values are then saved as initial values. The initial values are reloaded later, providing the basis for a simulated clinical encounter. Some thumbnail sketches follow. Some of the following (blue colored) have a link to the LAB exercise with notes and an explaination in Wrapup.

• Mr. Baker is in the ER with shortness of breath. He has tachycardia and a very strong pulse.
• Mr. Best is a political activist who has been on a 30 day hunger strike.
• Mr. Brown claims he's in good health, but is he?
• You've just discovered Mr. Cook in his garage and turned off his automobile.
• Mr. Davis was in an automobile accident an hour ago. Hemorrhage was severe and it may be continuing.
• Mr. East complains of headaches. He's come in for a complete physical.
• Ms. Frank is a cardiac patient. Her diagnosis is mitral stenosis.
• Mr. Green was struck in the head. He's always thirsty.
• Ms. Goode was sitting next to you in Wendy's when she suddenly gasped and slumped to the floor.
• Ms. Henry was lost for a day in the mountains in the winter, dressed in light clothing.
• Mr. Hobbs was in a marine accident and was lost at sea for 3 days with no food and water.
• Mr. Johnson has many complaints. His legs and feet are swollen. He can't get enough air.  
• Ms. Jones is a lifelong smoker. She says she tires easily and complains of dyspnea.
• Ms. Kelso is a Haitian immigrant who was very ill several times as a child.
• Ms. Lake claims to be in good health, but she says she gets too many headaches.
• Mr. Moore has a long history of heart disease. He's back in the clinic complaining of total exhaustion.
• Ms. Nance complains that she is tired and that she can't get enough air.
• Mr. Parks was found in an alley in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the ER.  
• Mr. Raven came to the ER complaining of chest pains.
• Mr. Rosco's power saw severed an electrical wire. Fellow workers started CPR. EMT's installed a ventilator.
• Ms. Smith reports periods of sweating and palpitations.
• Mr. Stone is seen in the ER. He speaks only Estonian, so we can't get a history.  
• Ms. Thomas presents as awake but confused. We don't have a history yet.
• Ms. Thorn is a skier who has lived at 10,000 feet for 2 months.
• Sgt. West stepped on a land mine in Croatia. He seemed to recover OK, but something happened. He feels bad and has no stamina.
• Mr. Wheat took one or more bullets to the chest. A friend rushed him to the ER.
• Mr. White says that he feels pretty good. 
• Mr. Wilson was being treated in the ER after a traffic accident. He suddenly had a seizure. 
• Ms. York was diagnosed with Shy-Drager syndrome. Have her lie down, stand up, try some light exercise.
