  • Orthotic & Prosthetic Residency Selection Process

    The Orthotic & Prosthetic residency is the second half of an individual's education and advancement towards becoming an O&P professional. Upon graduation from a CAAHEP accredited O&P program, individuals wanting to pursue certification at the practitioner level must attend an NCOPE accredited residency program. It is during the residency program that individuals gain the clinical training and experience needed to balance their primary education with experience to generate the best practitioner possible.

    Requirements

    • Graduate from a CAAHEP accredited O&P university program
    • Orthotic and Prosthetic (O&P) residents must satisfy the orthotic-prosthetic educational qualifications as outlined in the National Commission of Orthotic and Prosthetic Education's (NCOPE) Standards of Accreditation for the Orthotic/Prosthetics Residency Program.  http://www.ncope.org/
    • Transcripts must be submitted to NCOPE from the college or university which conferred your undergraduate or graduate degree.  Transcripts may be sent directly to NCOPE from the school or enclosed in official sealed envelopes mailed with your registration form.  All transcripts must be received within the first 60 days of starting a residency program.  For each day after the initial 60 days, the resident's end date will be extended.  Transcripts are not official if opened by the resident.  Student copies of transcripts are not acceptable.  If you are registering for a second residency, you do not have to submit a new transcript.

    Selection Process

    • Residency Selection Committee consists of: residency director, supervisor of orthotics, and supervisor of prosthetics
    • Applications for the residency are accepted from January 1 through April 1 prior to the residency beginning in July.
    • Application materials should include the following:
      • Letter of interest that included the applicant's goals for residency
      • Current curriculum vitae
      • Two letters of reference (those can be sent by the reference directly to our program or the letters can be included by applicants with their application materials)
      • Work Experience and Internships should be included, whether paid or volunteer work 
    • All applications are initially screened by members of the Residency Selection Committee, who look for students with the potential to become leaders in the field. Once the initial application screening process has been completed, 2-3 applicants per discipline will be selected for phone interviews.
    • The final selection process from among the interviewed applicants will be based on the candidate's academic credentials, work experience, and personal attributes including work ethic, enthusiasm, motivation, communication skills, willingness to be a team-player, and integrity displayed at the time of the interview. Those qualified applicants will then be ranked and ultimately 1 applicant per discipline will be selected by the selection committee.
    • The selected individuals will be notified of their selection and then they will start the University of Mississippi screening and application process.
    • Residents will be scheduled for UMC/SHRP orientation and given a start date in July.
    • All applicants not accepted will be notified concerning their status
    • Selection is not based on race, ethnicity, sex, religion, creed, national origin, age, sexual orientation, or physical disability.
