  • Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Application Process

     
     Please read all instructions prior to starting the application.

     

    1. Prior to Completing the Application

    • Obtain an electronic version of your current transcripts
      • PDF file preferred
      • If you are using Pages on a Mac, save the document as a PDF
    • Select two faculty recommenders and have valid e-mail addresses for each

    2. Faculty Recommendations

    • A form will be sent to your two faculty recommenders when you submit the application
    • Be sure you have valid e-mail addresses for both recommenders
    • Seek approval prior to submitting their names and e-mail addresses
    • Inform the recommenders that they will be receiving an e-mail to complete an online form
    • Inform your recommenders about the deadline
    • Once submitted, you will not be able to make changes to recommender information
    • If changes need to be made, send an e-mail to mcanterbury@umc.edu

    3. Transcripts

    • Need electronic version of your current transcripts (PDF file preferred )
    • Student's name MUST show on the transcript
    • Unofficial or student transcripts are acceptable
    • If selected for the program, the student may be asked to provide official transcripts

    4. Personal Information and Demographics

    • The online application collects basic personal information and demographics.

    5. Personal Statement

    • Prior to beginning the online application, you may want to prepare your personal statement.  This section of the application is your opportunity to explain your reason for applying to the program, your past research experience, your career goals and honors you have received. 

    6. Research Interests

    • In this section of the application, you will select the top three research areas that interest you.

    7. Graduate Programs

    • In this section of the application, you will select the top three graduate programs that interest you

    8. Corrections or Changes

    • If changes or corrections need to be made to your application after it has been submitted, go back to the application site and click on existing users. Use the same e-mail address and password that you used to complete the application. This can be done up to the deadline.
    • You will not be able to make any changes or corrections to your recommender information once you have submitted the application. If changes or corrections need to be made to this section, please send an e-mail to mcanterbury@umc.edu  
    • If changes need to be made after the deadline, please send an e-mail to Mary Canterbury: mcanterbury@umc.edu
    Once you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from Mary Canterbury. If you did not receive an e-mail, please contact Mary at mcanterbury@umc.edu.
