Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program
PI: Neeta Mehta
Description: This service grant provides dental assessment, diagnoses, and treatment for HIV/AIDS participants in the service area. Clinical services are provided at the Jackson Medical Mall clinics of the University of MS Medical Center. These services are provided predominately by dental residents and students with faculty participation and oversight.
Postdoctoral Training in General, Pediatric and Public Health Dentistry and Dental Hygiene
PI: Harold M. Livingston
Description: This grant provides equipment and supplies necessary for teaching the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
ACLS training is primarily for the postdoctoral dental residents and the faculty members associated with those residency programs. BLS is available to students, staff, residents, and faculty of the School of Dentistry.

Faculty Education Loan Reimbursement

Description: This HRSA grant provided incremental reimbursement of previously obtained student debt for current dental and dental hygience faculty members involved in the clinical training of the primary care dental student, general dentistry residents, and/or dental hygiene students.
Fatigue of Restorative Ceramics
PI: Jason A. Griggs, PhD, FADM
Description: Fatigue failure of ceramics occurs after the prosthesis is subjected to constant or periodic mechanical loading over time. Fatigue can cause failure under a biting force that was insufficient to fracture the prosthesis in its newly fabricated condition because intrinsic flaws reach a critical stress intensity factor level (even at low loads) following subcritical crack growth (SCG). The goals of this project are to develop easier methods of measuring subcritical crack growth for dental ceramics and to develop more accurate methods for predicting all-ceramic prosthesis lifetimes. The results are applicable to ceramics in other applications, such as orthopedics, as well as, in the aerospace, automotive, and energy industries.
Fatigue of Dental Implants
Description: Implant fatigue testing is costly in terms of both the time necessary to test specimens and the specimens themselves, which limits the number of specimens that it is feasible to include in an experiment. This is being improved through the use of finite element models and Monte Carlo statistical simulations to design more efficient accelerated lifetime tests, including both overstress acceleration and usage rate acceleration. The goal of this project is to more quickly acquire in vitro fatigue data and to accurately and precisely predicting the mechanical reliability of implants, especially the implant-abutment connection and abutment screw in dental applications. The results are applicable to metals in other applications, such as orthopedics, as well as, in the aerospace, automotive, and energy industries.
In Vitro Simulation of the Clinical Failure Mode of Resin-Based Laminate Denture Teeth

Description: Patients with complete dentures have reduced mastication efficiency due in part to reduced occlusal loads during chewing. Implant‐supported overdentures allow patients to exert greater bite force with confidence, which has resulted in increased use of denture teeth supported by implants but has also presented a greater mechanical challenge to denture teeth. In fact, overdentures have more than three times the incidence of fracture compared with fixed complete dentures. Our research group recently developed an in‐vitro test for chipping resistance that reproduces the failure origin and appearance of clinically retrieved denture teeth.
Correlation Between Microstructure and Chipping Resistance in Denture Teeth
Description: Our novel test method was used to collect preliminary data on three different denture tooth systems, and the preliminary data suggest a large difference in mean failure load between the different materials. This suggests that chipping resistance may be related to the material microstructure and that there may be an optimum microstructure that would correspond to a material with greater chipping resistance than all currently available materials. Consequently, the proposed project aims to test the following hypotheses: (1) There is a significant difference in mean failure load between highly filled, moderately filled, and nano‐filled resin‐based denture teeth. (2) The failure load will fit a non‐linear model with filler volume fraction and mean filler diameter as the independent variables.
Novel Biomaterials for Liver Tissue Engineering

Description: This project aims to design and characterize a new class of chemo-biologically synthesized copolymers that can be used to induce formation of 3-D in vitro liver tissue models. The second objective is to take these copolymers with the best charge/adhesion/morphological properties and investigate 3-D hepatocyte spheroid formation with a detailed kinetic and biochemical analysis of liver specific function. In addition to creating new materials, the work will study the fundamental relationships between the copolymer properties and biological function of liver cells and provide insight for future liver engineering and drug testing liver systems

Description: The objective of this study is to determine whether a device developed by Intelligent Optical Systems, Inc, can measure markers of bone density from saliva. In addition, the study will determine whether the concentrations of salivary biomarkers correlates with levels in urine and serum. If so, this device could be a reliable instrument for point-of-care screening for loss of bone mineral density, such as occurs in osteoporosis.

Data Mining and Visualization Tools and Techniques to Support Epedemiologic Research

Neighborhood Assessment of the Built and Social Environment in Hinds County, MS

Description: The objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of neighborhoods and provide visual insight into the unique features of each area. More specifically, the inventory will allow for the observation of neighborhood facilities, human services (such as hospitals and physician offices), modes of transportation, protective services (such as fire stations), recreational facilities, and overall neighborhood life within the community.
Three Dimensional Adipose Tissue Culture
PI: Amol Janorkar
Description: The most common mode of treatment for obesiity involves low-fat diet and exercise to control the patient's body weight and blood sugar levels. For effective treatment, obesity must be better understood at a cellular level with respect to metabolic state and environmental stress; however, currently used 2-dimensional in vitro cell culture does not represent the in vivo adipose tissue appropriately due to absence of complex architecture and cell signaling. This study will evaluate the adipocyte differentiation process when subjected to various concentrations of nutritionally relevant free fatty acids with respect to intracellular trigylceride accumulation, total protein content, generation of reactive oxygen species, and production of adipocyte-specific biological function.
Bone Tissue Culture on Elastin-based Scaffolds
Description: The ojectives of this study are: 1) To create novel ELP-45s5 bioglass scaffolds, 2) Characterize the mechanical, physico-chemical, and biological properties of the ELP-45s5 bioglass scaffolds, and 3) To determine if the composites of extracellular matrix based materials with the 45s5 bioglass will obtain acceptable mechanical properties with superior biocompatibility for bone tissue engineering.
