2 Students Accepted to Periodontics Specialty Training Programs
Two members of the Class of 2010 have been accepted to Periodontics Specialty Programs. Curtis Caskey will be attending LSU. His father, Dr. Charles Caskey, a UMMC and UAB alum, is a periodontist in Ridgeland, Mississippi and a long-time member of the part-time faculty in the Department of Periodontics and Preventive Sciences. Dustin Hedgpeth will be attending the program at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Manual of Clinical Periodontics in 3rd Edition
The Manual of Clinical Periodontics, co-authored by Dr. Francis G. Serio, Chairman of the Department of Periodontics and Preventive Sciences and Dr. Charles E. Hawley, Professor of Periodontics at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, is in its 3rd edition. Published by Lexi-Comp (www.lexi.com), this highly illustrated book is written primarily for general dentists and dental hygienists. It has also been used in predoctoral and graduate education programs. The book is available in both print and electronic forms.
Dr. Roger Johnson Recognized by the AADR
Dr. Roger Johnson, Professor, Department of Periodontics and Preventive Sciences, received the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) 2009 Student Research Group Mentor Award at the AADR's annual session in March. Dr. Johnson currently mentors 11 dental students working on a variety of research problems. One of his protegees, Dr. Jennifer Bain, was the 3rd place awardee in the 2008 AADR Hatton Competition.
Two Graduates in Periodontics Specialty Training
Two members of the UMMC School of Dentistry Class of 2009 have entered Periodontics specialty training. Dr. Jennifer Bain is a first year resident at the University of Alabama Birmingham. She hopes to complete a PhD as well and return to dental education. Dr. Reid Lester has started his program at the LSU School of Dentistry. He will be earning his MS as well as a certificate in Periodontics and plans to return to practice in the Jackson metro area.
Dr. Roland A. "Tony" Adams Rejoins Department faculty
Dr. Tony Adams, a member of the UMMC School of Dentistry Department of Periodontics faculty in the 1980s, has returned to a full time position in the department. After his time at UMMC, he was on the faculty at the Oregon Health Sciences University and then in private practice in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Adams brings an enthusiasm for teaching and a wealth of clinical and teaching experience to the program. A native of Australia, Dr. Adams is a graduate of the University of Adelaide, received his periodontics training at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY, and has graduate degrees from both the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University.
