Dr. Gilbert is a 1972 graduate of University of Alabama School of Dentistry and received a certificate in endodontics from Louisiana State University in 1979. He was designated a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics in 1984. Also in 1984, Dr. Gilbert was named Chairman of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. He attained the academic rank of professor in 1988. Dr. Gilbert was named Senior Associate Dean of the School of Dentistry in 2004. The recipient of numerous teaching awards and honors during his teaching career, students have selected him to receive teaching awards as "Teacher of the Year", "Teaching Excellence", the Hembree Honor Society, and UMC's Nelson Order. He was the recipient of the American College of Dentists (Mississippi Section) Education Award in 1992 and 2003. He was selected in 1992 and 1999 by the University of Mississippi Medical Center to receive the "Higher Education Academic Excellence Award", which is presented annually by the state legislature and state corporate community for outstanding achievement and leadership. Involved in all aspects of academia, Dr. Gilbert has chaired many vital committees and served in various offices of professional organizations. He was organizer and president of the Mississippi Association of Endodontists and has served in various officer positions, including president of the Mississippi chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an honorary dental society, and president of the Mississippi Chapter of the American College of Dentists. He is a member of numerous other professional organizations, which include fellowship in International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, both international honor dental organizations. He has published both research and clinical articles related to endodontics and has presented numerous continuing education courses and lectures over the years. In addition, Dr. Gilbert was a specialty consultant to the Veterans Administration Medical Centers for over twenty years and served in the U.S. Air Force and the Mississippi Air National Guard. Militarily, he received numerous awards for outstanding and meritorious service and held a national position as ANG Assistant to the Surgeon General for the Air Mobility Command, retiring at the rank of brigadier general.
