Dr. Aaron D. Puckett Jr. is currently a Professor of Biomedical Materials Science and Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). He is a Polymer Science graduate from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), receiving both his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1980 and 1986, respectively, under the direction of Dr. Roger Hester. Dr. Puckett is married to Leslie O. Puckett (30 years), who is also a USM graduate in Special Education. Dr. Puckett and Leslie have two children, Courtney Love and Eric David. Courtney received a B.S. in Psychology from USM and recently completed a B.S. in Nursing in May of 2008. Eric spent two years at USM and is now pursuing his dreams in Alaska. The Pucketts are members of the USM Eagle Club and the USM Foundation President Circle. Dr. Puckett is also a past Board member on the USM Foundation and Chairs the Deans Advisory Council for the School of Science and Technology at USM. Dr. Puckett received the award for Outstanding Contributions to Science by the Mississippi Academy of Sciences in 2008. Dr. Puckett has been a faculty member at UMMC for over 24 years and has distinguished himself as a teacher and researcher. He has received several million dollars in external funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes for Health, and from industry for research in biodegradable polymers and novel adhesive materials for dental and medical applications. He was awarded the Silver and Gold Medallions for Excellence in Research in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Dr. Puckett has published over 50 peer reviewed articles, numerous book chapters, over 100 scientific abstracts and has been invited to present his research at local, regional, national and international meetings. He holds a patent for an assist device for quadriplegics and a rubber toughened bone cement and another patent on a bone cement composition has been filed. Dr. Puckett serves as a Graduate Faculty member at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, The University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi State University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Agriculture and Bioengineering at Mississippi State University. Dr. Puckett has been elected to Sigma Xi Research Society and is an honorary member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Society. He is active in the Society for Biomaterials, the International Association of Dental Research, The American Chemical Society, and the Mississippi Academy of Sciences.
