Advanced skills laboratory instructor
Prepare for teaching session:
- Review learning objectives and evaluation criteria before sessions.
- Read instructor notes.
- Recognize correlates to other components of curriculum.
Encourage trainees to engage in active learning:
- Ask open-ended questions.
- Create trainee-centered, supportive, non-threatening environment.
- Encourage reflection and self-assessment.
Teach sessions:
- Coach trainees in the specific skills/procedures.
- Allow trainees to practice skills with each other ("teach back").
- Give trainees feedback on their performance.
- Model effective communication skills.
Assess the trainees' performance:
- Assess and document performance of trainees using evaluation criteria.
Time commitment:
- Typical package: 1.5-2 hours/session.
Patient Simulation Instructor
Prepare forĀ each scenario:
- Review learning objectives and evaluation criteria before each session.
- Rehearse and practice patient scenario before session.
- Prepare debriefing form and notes.
Create an optimal learning environment:
- Clearly describe scenario and patient management goals.
- Promote team approach to all aspects of patient care / designate team roles.
- Ask open-ended questions.
- Demonstrate reflective self-awareness.
- Provide feedback to team and individual trainees (debriefing).
- Assess the trainees' performance:
- Assess and document performance of trainees using evaluation criteria.
Time commitment:
- 2-3 hours/session: rehearse scenarios (1 hour), teach and debrief trainees (1 hour), evaluate trainees and scenario, feedback to MASSEC (1 hour).
