  • CSAC Guidelines

The Clinical Skills Assessment Center offers several guidelines and examples for interaction with patients. Click on the links to the right for more information.

    Included are:

    • Clinical assessment skills overview
    • Guidelines for Informed Consent Case
This is a representative consent form that addresses issues you need to discuss with a patient before obtaining consent for a procedure. Use this as a guideline in your “Obtaining Informed Consent” case.
    • Guidelines for a Telephone Call Case
Communication skills are even more important in a telephone encounter than a face-to-face encounter, as you do not have the benefit of facial expression, body posture, and other non-verbal cues to show your interest. Your tone of voice, choice of words, careful history taking, and clear instructions are crucial. These guidelines will assist you in your telephone encounter.
    • Guidelines for Delivering Bad News
The mnemonic, “SPIKES,” is used to outline steps in communicating bad news to a patient or family.
