What is a state medical asistance team (SMAT)?
It is a hospital-based team of medical professionals established to provide patient decontamination, mass medical care, alternate care facilities and mass drug distribution points as well as various other mission profiles for responding to any all-hazards incident. Mississippi currently has two SMAT II Councils - North and South - which are based at each of the Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) sponsor hospitals. The University of Mississippi Medical Center is the sponsoring hospital for the South Region, Mississippi MED-1, and has two of the 50-bed mobile field hospital units. The sponsoring hospital works in conjunction with the Mississippi State Department of Health and operates under the ESF-8 guidelines. SMAT teams are made up of, but not limited to, the following:
