    Isolation requirements

    • Disease: Rabies
    • Category: Standard
    • Infective material: Saliva
    • Duration of isolation: Duration of illness
    • Comments: If patient has bitten another individual or saliva has contaminated an open wound or mucous membrane, wash exposed area thoroughly and administer postexposure prophylaxis (Contact Student- Employee Health or the Emergency Department).

    Class 1

    This is a Class 1 reportable disease.

    • Class 1: Diseases of major or public health importance which shall be reported directly to the Department of Health by telephone within 24 hours of first knowledge or suspicion.
