  • Patient Requires Special Code

During a code, the patient's needs come first. When the patient is on isolation, there may not be time to don isolation garb during such an emergency. Be mindful that you are to wash hands and apply appropriate precautions as soon as possible.

All non-disposable items should be returned for decontamination and reprocessing. Articles that are contaminated with infective material should be bagged and labeled before being sent for decontamination and reprocessing.

All disposable items should be discarded. Articles that are contaminated with infective material should be bagged and discarded. No special precautions are indicated for disposal of items that are not contaminated (or likely to be contaminated) with infective material.

All equipment that is not sent to central services or discarded should be cleaned with a disinfectant/detergent solution. The code cart is to be wiped down with a disinfectant before being removed from the patient's room.
