Isolation Guidelines

  • Isolation Cart or Ante Room Cabinets

    • Purpose: To provide a clean working surface and to maintain a compact central storage unit for isolation supplies
    • Obtaining an isolation cart: Isolation carts may be obtained by calling Patient Equipment at (601) 815-6929.

    Equipment kept in cart or isolation drawers

    • Small, medium and large boxes of non-sterile gloves
    • Surgical masks
    • N-95 masks are needed only for patients in Airborne Infection Precautions, otherwise surgical masks should be used for Droplet Precautions.
    • Disposable thermometer
    • Biohazardous specimen bags - These are the small ones that are to be used in the pneumatic tube
    • Small white paper bags
    • Add gowns if required for the patient.

    Items to be placed in all ante room cabinets

    • Small, medium and large boxes of non-sterile gloves

    • Biohazardous specimen bags - These are the small ones that are to be used in the pneumatic tube
    • Small white paper bags
    • Add gowns if required for the patient.
    • Designated BP cuff and stethoscope for all patients with VRE

    Special instructions for nursing staff

    • Each unit is responsible for keeping their isolation carts or isolation drawers/cupboards cleaned and stocked. If unable to locate a cart, contact the unit manager.
    • Each unit is responsible for ordering masks, gloves and fluid-resistant isolation gowns from the storeroom.

    Steps

    • Unit staff will clean (with an approved hospital disinfectant) and stock the cart or cabinets daily and as needed.
    • Place the cart in the corridor beside the patient's room.
