Living Independence for Everyone of Mississippi
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of accidental injuries and deaths in adolescents, ages 15-19 and Mississippi ranks well above the national average. The Driver's IMPACT project is a one-day educational experience for adolescents with minor driving offenses.
The course incorporates the National Safety Council's defensive driving curriculum with presentations from various first responders, including paramedics, flight nurses and highway safety patrolmen.
To augment the didactic portion of the course, our emergency room staff performs a mock trauma demonstration and tours participants through the emergency departments and intensive care units. Following the mock trauma, participants are visited by a survivor who recounts the accident that changed everything, its effects on family and the daily limitations he or she now lives with. This portion of the course is coupled with a visit to our rehabilitation services to experience the tedious process of recovery after a motor vehicle crash.
Mississippi Safety Services
Driver's IMPACT advances and illustrates the mission of the Batson Safety and Community Outreach program by providing teens that have been proven to engage in dangerous driving behavior with the education and experiences that influence improved decision-making capability.
**At this time, the course is not open to the public. Participants are accepted through recommendations from traffic courts for traffic violations.
